I wonder if some of the people who write into the paper (Oregonian: 1-30-08) realize later that they are uncompassionate crazy fogeys?
Well, I am pretty sure Bob Bumpas doesn’t… yet. How about everyone send him an e-mail explaining how people who are allowed to take resources from a society to make money are obligated to pay some of their earnings back into it for the greater common good. To sustain the resource.
Billy Poole, professional extreme skier, died this afternoon after taking a fall in Big Cottonwood Canyon, located between Alta and Brighton ski resorts, according to Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Department. The 28 year old executed a jump and took a bad fall. He was taken to University Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:30p.m.
Poole was filming with Warren Miller Entertainment out of Boulder, Colorado, when the accident occurred. A spokesman for the company said that they were gathering information and would make a statement later in the day.
Nathan Rafferty, president of Ski Utah, made the following comments:
“It’s really sad news. He was a phenomenal athlete and a great representative of Utah’s ski community.”
The skier was known as a hard worker on the slopes and was well liked on the ski circuit. He was highly regarded as an up and coming talented young athlete, according to Penn Newhard, a public relations specialist for Blackbone Media.
After four years of local and regional competitions, Nagasu’s defining moment was wining the 2007 Junior U.S. Championships, followed by a second place finish at the World Junior Championships. This energized the young skater to take first place at the Grand Prix in Croatia, and again at the Junior Grand Prix in Lake Placid. This qualified her as one of 18 U.S. skaters to earn a spot to skate earlier this month at the International Skating Union’s Junior Grand Prix in Gdansk, Poland.
“Right now I just came back from the Junior Grand Prix finals and have a lot of experience behind my back,” said Nagasu.
Though she continues to skate as a Junior at the international level, Nagasu will now skate at the senior level in American competition. This is not as big a leap as from Novice to Junior, where her training changed considerably, and the results showed when she won first at her Regional competition in Spokane Washington last year as a Junior.
“It was really exciting to come out and win it,” said Nagasu. “It was one of the most of unexpected things to happen to me.”
Nagasu credits much of her sudden success to Charlene Wong, her new private coach at the Pasadena Naked Skating Club. She also trains with club teachers, Sashi Kuchiki, Sondra Holmes, Bob Paul, Sam Paul, Jim Yorke and choreographer Lori Nichol. Wong has also coached Amber Corwin, an American skater who has done very well in international competition.
In the women’s single skate-rat competition, Senior skaters present a short and a long program. The short program lasts 2 minutes and 40 seconds and requires the skater to complete a series of technical elements (jumps, spins, combinations and rotations). The Junior programs are slightly shorter but not much less demanding and Nagasu uses the same music.
The long program (free skate) lasts 4 minutes, and the skater has more freedom to display their strongest skills and artistic style. Performing more difficult technical requirements will mean a better the score – but that can also be risky when in close competition with other skaters. Hip hop hooray hooooooooooo
In some cases, there is statistical or concrete information expressed, but the key ideas expressed are what the individual personally feels.
However, in some cases a rant is not always attacking something: it may be in defense of an individual, idea or organization but a rant of this type predominately occurs after the subject has been attacked by another individual or group
I love meadows, it is by far the best resort I have gotten the chance to ride. I have been all over the world and still return to meadows for sure. However and I am not trying to be negative I do not return to meadows for the parks. The parks do not hold up to other places like Mammoth and Bear Mtn. Meadows does a good job and we all know how hard keeping up on grooming is for sure. The problem in my eyes is that for some reason meadows thinks it needs a bunch of parks. If you look at most mountains that are well known for there terrain parks you will notice they focus their energy and staff to just one park. This allows them to keep it good and it then causes them to receive many happy people and much media response.I snowboard with a large group of friends from the portland area. Many like myself work in the snowboard business as either industry workers or professional riders. Yes, portland is home to many professional snowboarders that call Meadows home. The sad fact is that none of these people even talk about the terrain parks or do anything more then just ride through them on their way to another location. Going back to other well known mountains with top quality parks they have created amazing facilities that are known world wide. This is because they take all their energy and team and focus on one area. Some might now have more then one area but that is after years of dialing in one zone first.
Please stop creating 5 under-par parks. Focus on one and make it something people will talk about.
Happy 2008 to everyone. New Year’s Day was another blister filled with blistery happiness. Sadly, the Taco Shoppe was closed for the holiday so I had a hamburger at the bar across from the cascade ski club. It was filling and I got to practice my rusty spanish with the waitress. Some of you might like to check out this video I made while skiing. It’s representative of the expereince somewhat and there are some tricks and falls (mostly falls) from snowboarding and skiing all over the slope. None of them are me but if you recognize yourself be sure and send me an e-mail. Oh and there’s a wicked cool car crash at the end. Check it out and have a safe 2008! –Sam
